Project Oscar – Raising Awareness on Neonatal Jaundice
Background
Reckitt, the parent company of leading FMCG brands like Dettol and Harpic, has a strong presence in Nigeria. Having previously collaborated on impactful storytelling projects, Reckitt entrusted SPS Media with producing a high-quality documentary video production in Lagos for their latest initiative: Project Oscar.
Project Oscar is an advocacy campaign focused on Neonatal Jaundice, a condition affecting newborns. Initially launched in Vietnam, the project was highly successful, leading Reckitt to expand it to Nigeria. The documentary centered on Oscar Anderson, a young man living with the long-term effects of Neonatal Jaundice but has dedicated his life to advocate for neonatal health awareness.

The Challenge
Reckitt approached SPS Media with the initiative but required expert guidance in:
- Developing a compelling documentary narrative tailored to the Nigerian audience.
- Producing a high-quality documentary video within a tight deadline.
- Capturing authentic and emotionally engaging moments to drive awareness.
Our Approach to Documentary Video Production in Lagos
To meet these objectives, we implemented a structured documentary production workflow:
1. Pre-Production: Research & Story Development
- Conducted in-depth research on Neonatal Jaundice in Nigeria and its medical impact.
- Developed a shoot script to guide the storytelling, ensuring an engaging and visually compelling narrative.
- Planned key locations and logistics for seamless execution.
2. Production: Filming Across Key Locations
The four-day documentary shoot covered significant locations in Lagos:
- Murtala Muhammed International Airport – Capturing Oscar’s arrival.
- The King’s Palace – A cultural perspective on neonatal health awareness.
- Lagos General Hospital – Interviews with medical professionals.
- World Disability Day Event – Featuring Oscar’s advocacy speech and other stake holders.
A lean but expert documentary crew ensured smooth production:
- Producer
- Director of Photography (DP) / Director – Ben Elekewachi
- Sound Recordist – Nurudeen Sanni
- Production Assistant
We filmed with the Sony FX3 camera with cinematic lenses for high-quality visuals. 85% of the footage was shot handheld to create an immersive storytelling experience. For seamless audio integration, we connected the sound mixer wirelessly to the camera, ensuring clarity in dialogues and ambient sounds.
3. Post-Production & Final Delivery
- Editing & Color Grading: The entire post-production process was completed within two weeks to meet the client’s deadline.
- Client Revisions: Minor feedback was incorporated to refine the final cut.
- Final Delivery: A powerful documentary that aligned with Reckitt’s brand and advocacy goals.
